You can’t tell me you expect BigCo Twitter accounts to follow everyone who follows them? What would be the point? In this age of search tools, why follow everyone when you can monitor the entire Twitstream anyway, and respond where appropriate?
In a space like Twitter the point would be to allow Direct Messages. It’s fine to respond to quick problems/comments through an @ reply, but for an extended conversation, DMs may be a better solution.
Of course though the best way to monitor is, as you say, via keyword search etc.
