again, i’m probably contradicting someone here, but i cant stand seeing those “Welcome new followers @somebody and @someoneelse tweets.” They serve no purpose except to clog up a timeline.

If you’re having a private (DM) conversation with someone, make sure you keep it that way. Don’t accidentally broadcast a direct message. I did this once, and it was very embarrassing. I sent my first DM properly, then decided I needed to say something else. But this time, I accidentally sent a normal Tweet instead of a DM. It went out to everyone, completely out of context. Ugh. I still shudder and blush!

Be nice. Even when people are being really silly, responding with humour and a light touch goes a long way. Yelling at them about how they don’t “get social media” just makes enemies not friends. GROUP HUG !!111!!!

The @KevinRuddPM story suggesting they crashed Twitter over fast follower pickup is demonstrably rubbish. They should have said “Something went wrong. We have no idea what. Sorry.”
Honesty, openness, preparedness to fail publicly are key in the hyperconnected world.

for the most part people on twitter (apart from the bots) just want you to have a conversation with them - reciprocity is important

It sounds obvious (hopefully it is) but if not… be yourself.
Your personality shines through even in 140 characters. If you’re feigning to be someone else - something else - people will know and be extremely distrustful of the information you provide.

Here is a little formula I just cooked up called the Tweet-GQ (Tweet Gary Quotient) that works out a Twitter rating. To be considered as a valuable system to be used on top 100s etc. Before I go into explanation, here is the secret formula
( ((Following/3)+Followers) x (Followers/Updates) ) / 10
This takes into account the raw numbers of followers weighted over following. More importantly it then has an critical multiplier - that of how many updates you do in relation to the followers you generate. So simply, it rewards high numbers of followers but also takes into account how many tweets or updates it took you to get that many followers.
So a few examples at moment - SilkCharm 72, Trib 31, Lee 34, NickHodge 17, Gary 22, malburns 4, mpesce 45, andrewbarnett 6, stilgherrian 6, kcarruthers 11 and JonoH 5 …
To do this yourself without needing a degree in pure math (or an online calculator - to be done by someone). Here is a simple 3 step DIY version…
- Divide followings by 3 and then add this to followers - write the number down
- Divide followers by updates - write the number down
- Multiply the two numbers above and divide by ten - et voila. Your very own TweetGQ

If you don’t reply to someone’s tweet straight away remember to give context in your response so they know what tweet you were responding to. (hash)-tagging can be a useful shortform way of doing this

Also, remember that twitter is a Public Conversation - so don’t be abusive as it will likely have unintended consequences. If you are going to harsh on someone be prepared to back it up with a blog post or further tweets explaining your views. Context collapses on the internet which will almost guarantee that your tweets will be taken out of context.
